What they really need to sort out is the stupid idiots that sit in the middle lane when there isn't anyone in the driving lane.

thats not really the point, its for men like me that wont get done for doing 88mph when i want to get home. anyone else can still drive at 60 in the slow lane if they want
I doubt they are proposing it for that reason and im sure the would say they would rather drivers got home safer than quicker.
From what ive seen those that drive in the fast lanes do more than 70 and what happens when they increase the limit? People are just going to drive faster than the limit so then the chances of people being caught doing 100+ will get fucked easier.

But the 100mph thing is because its 30mph above the limit, meaning that 110mph will be the 'instant ban' threshhold

Will they?
I've always found it a natural thing, if I want to get somewhere and I'm not in a particular hurry, I'll do 70. If I'm wanting to get home quickly I'll do 80. I think a 'natural' speed for most cars is around 75, so they're making progress quickly around lorries but not hammering along pointlessly.
I reckon an 80mph limit would actually be better, meaning most are legal, but not really increasing average speeds.

80mph limit is a waste of time.. should be 100mph.
allso if you drive a toyota and are asian you should be banned from the motorway.
aswell as women who sit in the middle lane in there renault clios.

I never sit at 80, my car doesnt like it. Sits at 70 and 90 much better (due the gearing).

How can it like 90 better than 80?
Meh, doesn't bother me, infact I'll just increase my cruise control speed from 80 to 85. I drive a diesel, 1 or 2mpg isn't going to matter!

Sounds unsafe to me....I think people forget how fast 80 Mph actually is! So much can happen so quickly at even 70...so increasing it is going to increase the chance of fatal accidents imo.
Plus the fact..people will always do over the limit...so there'll just be more drivers doing 90 Mph

of course theres a risk, but theres a risk of dieing when driving at 30mph, never mind 70mph, so what are you supposed to do?
theres a risk factor in everything but they must have reasons as to why it would be an advantage to increase the limit otherwise they wouldn't bother entertaining the idea.
also, not sure about you but during the day when most drivers are on the road, you can't even do 70mph so the only people this will affect are people who drive ''out of hours'' as they won't have to sit on an empty road with nothing around them doing a lower speed then should be allowed.

It's about fucking time honestly, reduce the limit down to 70 again when it's raining just to keep the H&S people happy and all is good.
Those limits were introduced when cars were barely able to do 70mph and had drum brakes without airbags and crumple zones, long overdue.

Works in germany on roads without speed limits.
People dont just crash for no reason, especially driving in straight lines most of the time.
People crash because there are a shit load of idiots that dont use mirrors properlly, or they cant judge someones speed or because they dont know how quickly the person in front is braking.

they are more disciplined drivers in germany, not to mention its an offence to be in an overtaking lane when the adjacent inside lane is free, that should be here IMO and policed as much as possible

Spot on, upto now in attempts to cut congestion, we've had widening of motorways, what's the point? It just gives the idiots another lane to block. Making it an offense and policing it would probably have much more of an affect on congestion whilst pulling in money from fines rather than spunking money on adding extra lanes which are still being used improperly and making the whole thing a waste of money.

So the reason they decided to let a no speed limit zone is due to disceplined people? That i doubt.
Around here if someone is killed in an accident they dont say what or whos at fault, all they do is stick up speed cameras even if speeding wasnt the issue.

The Point of resonance. Its under just on under 3000 rpm and the engine becomes slightly unbalanced and abit noisey.
Google it computer geek.

lane widening is waste anyway, they always end up at a bottle neck

Its all to do with tax, as people are thinking i think wont use the car as much now.
But give them a little brucey 80mph bonus, most drivers will now travel faster using more fuel and making more tax.
In the scheme of things 100 mile journey at 70 mph is 86 minutes, 80 mph is 75 minutes.
Saying that i would rather drive at 80 or 90 mph as this keeps you more alert on the road, slower speeds can cause your brain to be less active.
Stoping distance at 70mph, 315 ft was a 1970 ford anglia with drum brakes.

Agree! Should be policed with un-marked police cars, with video camera's running to provide evidence. Very easy to set up IMO, first time is just a warning then 3 points and £60 fine.

I have found this, driving at 60 one day I was so bored, wanted to fall asleep, when I drive at faster speeds, it means I am overtaking people, being more aware of who's around me, etc.

Sound, with any luck it'll force people to be more observant.
They should make the limit 150 for a week, I'll spend the entire 7 days barreling up behind people in the wrong lane with my hands out of the roof.
Bit more ownership of the issue is no bad thing.
