Owned both.
GSI was running Phase 3.5 setup, CTR was standard bar a Cold Air Intake.
CTR dicks all over a GSI in every aspect. end of thread.

I have just bought a modded EP3 after a string of Vauxhalls and I think it is great. Certainly seems like a lot of car for the money and the gearshift is far better than any Vauxhall i've owned.
There are bargains to be had on both cars at the moment though.

Get the GSI get it remapped. Also a lot rarer than a type R.

i was looking at both of theese and ii think i'd choose the gsi, mainly due to the looks, toys and tuning potential.
type r is great but would cost more to mod and theres loads of them about.

have you driven a CTR as it would suggest you haven't
Looks is a personal aspect but everyone who has driven one rates the drives, engine and drivetrain etc
I suggest you go and drive one then come back and update your post

ive driven both and i really have to be honest i hate the whole silly revving thing even hate my mates rx8 to thats just the same....... type r does handle no doubt about it but interior is gash looks like a disability van.........
its all well and good saying looks is personal thing but if heather from eastenders was the best shag of your life would u choose her over tina from coronation street no you'll take tina and the worser shag...... same thing different objects
i do believe the honda is better car... but people regard the gsi as the lowest of the low when its only the handling which is worse and lets face it cant be that bad as my friends cant shake me off in mine in a variety of different hot hatches so cant be that bad can it

I was in this exact same situation before I chose the CTR...
The Civic is more fun, more reliable, the looks are a love/hate affair.. personally I've got more fond of mine over time... The Civic also has better brakes, steering and gearbox
Corsa120 interior comparison below
Interior on an ep3
vs
Interior on a mk4 GSI
Exterior on an ep3
vs
Exterior of a mk4 GSI
People keep banging on about modifying the ep3 is expensive in comparison.. well of course it's JAP and N/A... we'd all save money shopping @ Lidl/Aldi instead of Tesco/Sainsbury's but you get what you pay for
In terms of performance there isn't anything in it on a straight line (from experience...).

I had a EP3 Premier and currently have the misfortune of owning a GSI.
I would rather have a dry rub with a hand full of glass shards than take a GSI over a EP3.

What's your budget? Potentially better cars out there than both of those depending on how much you have.
IMO picking which is best out of those is like deciding which colour is best in beige and magnolia, neither float my boat. The Astra looks ok and I love a turbo but it's about as bland as they come inside and not a great drive. CTR looks cack (again IMO) and still has the cheap Jap feel inside, handles beautifully and goes well but realistically the performance it has now is all you're going to get unless you spend big on it.

my comparison above is basically just saying that every single car compared on this forum the only thing that matters APPARENTLY and is the MOST important thing when purchasing a car is the HANDLING.......HANDLING........HANDLING........HANDLING.........HANDLING there is more to car and more reasons to buy a car than just HANDLING!
not everybody buys a car for its handling ive got a gsi but its my mrs car and she could not give two shits whther it handles worser than a type r the dam thing probably never gets revved past 3.5k again cos she dont drive quick and dont give one really HENCE THE REASON NOT EVERYBODY BUYS A CAR FOR SAME REASON AS SOMEONE ELSE.....
all i will say is ive owned our gsi for 4 years and 2 months and only spent 80 quid on a air flow meter and that is it has been unbelievably reliable

Agree with the above. My first car after the Corsa was a Clio 172, similar to the Type R in a lot of ways. It handled like nothing I'd driven before and at first I loved it. However I pretty quickly tired of it and the way it had to be revved to get anywhere and general lack of refinement so I sold it after 12months and bought an S3.
At first I was a little disappointed, the chassis is quite numb and it wasn't as much fun as the Clio but it didn't take long for that to fade. I'll never get bored of coming off roundabouts in 2nd, on boost and flooring it in any weather.

BIG running/maintanence bills for any Evo tho. Just make sure you take that into account.
