Diesels might be more to buy, but also generally worth more when it comes to selling! A lot of people seem to forget that.

I was doing around 8k when I had the diesel Ibiza, but it saved me loads, cheaper insurance, tax and better MPG

Now,he says when he had the hyundai,he was putting 40quid in once a month which done him fine with a wee bit extra left over. Now he says he puts 40quid of diesel in the 206 and that lasts him 6 weeks doing the same miles. His life is pretty routine so i have no reason not to believe him.

Can these people who do the maths work the above out for me please.

He seems to be making a killing of a saving whilst doing fuk all miles in his derv.

Same. A woman I work with went from an Astra VXR to a 1.6 Leon Ecomotion diesel. Reckons she was putting £40 a week in the VXR to work and back and now does it on £20.

These real world use claims just don't reflect the calculations and I can see no reason why she would lie.

First to bite wins.

Well comparable to a similar spec Ibiza for example, which would be the 1.8T FR, which would get around 30-35mpg, compared to the diesels 45-60. Tax is a lot less (about half of the top of my head), i would of payed well over 2k for the petrol where as the tdi was 1k in standard spec, 1.6k for modded policy

the interesting factor for me

quote:
Extrapolating our figures over 12,000 miles (the average annual mileage), the diesel car would cost £575 less to run. Given the initial cost disparity, 20 months would pass before the TDI began saving its owner any money.

Over 36 months, the total saving equates to less than £5 per week.

...and ignoring the higher residual presumably? (As usual in these debates)

At 25k+ a year out my own pocket, diesel for commuting, petrol for playing.
