I usually do 3x6, building upto 3x8 but when having a read about squating I found conflicting opinions on amount of reps, some saying 15. Think I'm going to aim for 12 whilst I get into it a bit more and find find my level.

12 reps sounds more hypertrophy than strength?

I generally don't go over 5 reps, apart from 531 cycles.

Now football season has finished I'm just thinking it might be for the best to start off, don't want to get giddy and end up hurting my back so if I work downwards on the reps (until I get to 5-6 reps) while increasing the weights it'll be a safer progression!

If you're hurting your back when squatting it's likely that your hips/hamstrings are too tight causing you to "tuck" - basically what Jake was saying about ass-to-grass.

Starting Strength is infact awesome.

Out of interest how much weight are people squatting?

Also whatother exercises do people do on leg day? I've been focusing on squats and weighted lunges, then finishing on the leg press but that's it really.

going to low in squats will fuck up yours knees, dad used to be huge and his knees are fucked from doing squats so i wouldnt go to low, i go parallel

one rep max is about 190 ish

actually that is bollocks. if you think of the mechanics of the knees going below parallel is safer on the joints than stopping before parallel

when you have 190kg on a bar and go past parrallel it puts alot more strain on the joints to overcome the angle, if you control your movements e.g. take it slow and not drop fast then you wont cause damage going parrallel

is that you in your sig

yes mate whys that? when you hold the weight above parrel it puts lateral forces on the knee joint. when you go past paralell the weight off the joint and the muscle fibre takes over. the hip copes with most of the load. its only when you stand there for ages with the bar on your shouler does it affect the knee

not if you do it properly, doing little weight under 100kg it doesnt do much damage when you get heavier doing deep squats puts so much pressure on the knee, when im parrallel i feel no strain on my knee as the muscles are always tense and controlled when i do deep squats the pressure is huge. people may vary but i learnt from dad and he used to be huge as well as his mates who did it for 20+years

I dont intend to sound horrible and sorry if it offended you but everyone lifts slightly different which alters the pressure points and when u have 150+ on your shoulders you need to be carful and watch your knees and hips, I've seen one nasty accident of a knee bending, wasn't nice at all

I'm only trying to advise people so later in life there knees are fucked and they can run around after there grand children, dad now has trouble walking because of the squats so I speak from experience. Harsh as it may seem I just don't want people to end up like him

maybe hes got fucked knees because he used to squat? every piece of literature, and everyone ive spoke to that squats either for training or competition puposes has said its safer to go below parallell than to stop above it

Yeah he used to squat deep every time he said yes you build muscle faster but does more damage to the knees so I took his advice and never had any pain since, as I said everyone is different
