Yea its probably out of my league now tbh, theres a computer shop nearby who do free diagnosis so I'll drop it in in the morning. I suspect I'll need a new hard drive though. I want to try just starting a fresh install on my hard drive but at the same I don't as theres so many photos on there I don't want to lose.
If it turns out the HD is shot, will I be able to retrieve them from it?

yeah, most probably.
If you have another computer you might be able to buy a simple usb-to-HD cable and get them off that way.
My old HD had a SATA II connection so I bought a USB-to-SATA II cable and got the files off with that.

Screw paying somewhere. Do what Allan said and just stick in any old HDD for the time being and install windows on it, keep this one as a secondary one and see if you can pull the data off and format it.

Depends if your BIOS supports it. Might be easier to whip out the drive from the caddy and just put it into the PC.

just go buy another HDD, take your old one out, install fresh o/s onto new drive. once everything is all working again get some antivirus software etc, plug in your old drive as a secondary then let the virus software run through your secondary HDD. once thats done and everything is cleared take yoir new hdd out replace with your original and away you go, keep the fresh hdd safe in the machine but not plugged in and just use it to restore anything in future.. or keep it as the primary drive and just copy stuff across.
what i do now is partition my HDD so c: is purley windows and system files and d: is where i keep everything, that way if there is a problem i dont loose anything. you could argue tho that if the hdd does go faulty then you will loose everything but it doesnt happen so much anymore as it used to, i used to run 2 seperate hdd's but just dont bother now.
and you can format c: and reinstall your o/s without touching d: and all your porn collection.

£45 for format and reload, plus an extra £15 to save my data. I'll deffinitely be backing everything up when I get it back!

That's a good price, I charge £75 for the format and reload although my price includes the backup and all latest updates for Windows etc.
