Im not a physics master but surely the effect of air between the wings and ground would push it up not down?

Why? There is nothing to hold the pressure in, its no ground effect car.

venturi effect, basically how diffusers keep cars stuck to the track

but logicically if planes had too much, they wouldnt be able to take off

Yeah thats what I'm saying, the venturi effect is when the air is sped up through a smaller area, the cross sectional area of the curved underside of the lowest part of the fuselage is prob 1 cm, no where near enough to make a difference.

I'll say it again, at that height ground effect would be happening in a big way. So at that height its actually got more lift, not less.

There's a minimum altitude as well is there? I thought it was a case of it occured as long as you had a surface within a certain distance of the underside of the wing.

From my reading I believe there is a optimum level when your rely on ground effect yes Neil

According to wikipedia (yes i know) its a phenomonom which occurs pretty much as soon as the wing is generating lift.

Nope, iirc vortices start to form on the wing tips as you gain altitude. When ground effects occurring there not an issue.
