Seeing as how you trust the guardian so much:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jun/02/liverpool-transfers
The free signings Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic, for example, earn £100,000 and £120,000 a week at Liverpool respectively, although the latter's astonishing salary includes a signing-on fee payable over the first 12 months of his contract.

How the hell are Chelsea going to be allowed in Europe when the rules come in to play when they go round splashing the money to release this guy, £50m on Torres, £20m on Luiz and then however much it'll cost for Falcao. They make no money, surely they are fucked long term?

O and the fact most of the current chelsea squad has little or no resale value as a number of the stars are all over 30.

City are in the same boat. The wage bill is more than the club brings in. Don't know how either of them are going to suddenly start making money or meet the acceptable losses. As it stands they are miles off.

Andre Villas-Boas has resigned as manager of Porto, paving the way for his appointment as Chelsea manager.
The Times understands that Villas-Boas sent the Portuguese champions a fax today terminating his contract after Chelsea agreed to pay the €15 million (about £13 million) release clause.
Chelsea opened negotiations to secure his exit over the weekend and enable Villas-Boas to rejoin the club where he worked as a scout under Jose Mourinho. The 33-year-old has since become one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe after guiding Porto to a domestic league and cup double and Europa League success last season.
Villas-Boas, often nicknamed “mini Mourinho”, is understood to have reached an informal agreement with Chelsea on Sunday night. He will become the youngest manager in Premier League history and he has been offered a three-year contract worth £4.5 million a year, more than four times his salary at Porto.
Chelsea are paying.

"FC Porto was today notified of the intention of Andre Villas-Boas to resign from his contract with the club by triggering the release clause immediately," read a Porto statement.
"The contract will be terminated once the required amount is paid."
The Lusa news agency had reported earlier on Tuesday that Villas-Boas would pay the £13.2m himself.

They will easily find a loophole. Like, one of city's owners companies buying a seat/box for £50m, instant money in the green

No save it for steve

Some reports in Portugal claimed that Villas-Boas would personally pay the €15m himself but this seems unlikely considering the enormity of the sum. While Villas-Boas may legally have had to trigger the clause, Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, is likely to provide the money.

I thought I had read that they can't do that either. Any deals that happen to do with sponsors or boxes and are linked to the owner have to be at what is deemed a normalish rate.
How they keep tabs on that I don't know

Spending money that they made themselves, Ben G. Man United have got well over £100m in the bank, all their own money.
Chelsea and Man City do not make any money. They run at massive losses and go spending someone elses money.
