what renders the transition? is it javascript or something? my guess is something happening with the transitions, some pixels being lost in the transparency stage

A little too desaturated I think, but its a nice setting & composition.

Anything you could do to get a little detail back into the sky, or was it a grey and overcast day?

yeh overcast, was only a little quick few photos before it got dark

I generally think if you need to split the saturation between the subject and background, the subject isn't interesting enough.

It's a nice effect to see once or twice, but I certainly wouldn't want to see lots of compound photos like that. Also it's a bit of a cliché.
