Use ps3mediaserver to stream mkv files, works fine.

And yes, I believe it uses the PC and converts on the fly. Works fine though

It doesn't play the mkv's directly though, it converts them on the fly to a readable format by the PS3. Put a MKV file on a USB stick and it won't play.

You can pick the R3700 Revo up on eBuyer for £200, or you could get a NMT such as the Popcorn Hour or one of the WDTV series which will stream SD and HD material from a NAS without any problems

edit: Apple TV will also stream SD and HD material and look pretty if you put XBMC on it - I think they're only £99 as well

basically, you jailbreak your Apple TV, then you can install custom software on it, then you stream from your computer.

if you have a mac, then check out plex, and plex for apple tv

Its a UI for certain systems, oriuginally delvoped form HTPC's then ported to other systems, QUite funky and allows you scrape data from various sources to put together data, film covers, ratings etc.

Quite a few UI's like this availble for the devices out there. XMBC is the most estabhlished and has a large following.

Those would make good media players but apart from the PCH, none of them have a BD drive (suppose you could an external but it'd add a fair amount of cost) which was the original question.

Not really a solution if you buy films. Could possibly use the MakeMKV bodge for XBMC, but it has it's issues.

PCH, DNLA enabled BD-Player or PS3 are probably the best bets for what James asked for.
