If it went on in one coat it wouldn't be anything like as much as a pain in the arse. Worst bit is getting covered in paint and then washing all the rollers etc, takes f-ing ages.

Don't mind decorating at all but as above, I fucking hate the cleaning up, especially washing out rollers - seems to take forever. Any tips Oliver?

Yes to a certain degree and I do enjoy doing it myself, however sometimes the finish they can achieve is much better than your average person, even if you spend ages prepping. For example wood work and painting around cornice/coving details what would take me ages masking, then painting, one of my decorators can do it by eye in one go!

Also sometimes after you have bought the paint and all the materials brushes etc you might have well hired someone to come in and do the job in half the time. Often Decorators work in teams and take literally half the time it would take you. This is where the value for money come into it IMO

Decorating is fairly easy imo, my old man was a really keen diy enthusiast and I always used to "help"/get in the way when i was younger. He taught me how to lay bricks, plaster, wallpaper, paint, woodwork, lay carpets etc. So when my lodger left I decided to redecorate the spare room and apart from 1 odd brush mark the room looks pukka, carpet is tight and no gaps, moved the radiator.

I think its taking time to learn and be patient. That above took me about 25 hours over 4 days.

I quite enjoy DIY though, built a pond and raised flower bed at the missus' parents in about 8 hours. Admittedly the pond is only small but it looks ace.

but what would happen if you got a painter in and wasn't happy with the finish (heard it happen so many times before).

you then need to pay someone to sort it out or do it yourself.

i agree, but seen and heard of plenty of people giving them half at the start (or more), getting a half arsed job and then they leave and you're buggered.

I just dive in and give it a go.

Did all my bedroom about 3 months ago, stripped the wallpaper off, filled cracks in the wall, fitted new upvc window frame, painted the woodwork and ceiling, papered the walls and laid a new carpet.

Still got a few little bits and peices mainly a new socket next to the bed as its broken, new light fitting and some new door handles, But they are on my to do list!

You mask up coving? See that's where professionals are quicker. Good tools etc.

As for washing rollers, start to run them under taps and use the back of a butter knife and run it down the roller.

Today me and my dad, prepped, 2 coats on walls and ceilings and masked up skirtings in two bedrooms. All that's left is the woodwork.

i'd say painting airfix is more skilled.

DIY house stuff, sometimes its the time and knowing the best order and ways to do things thats where the professionals are better, mainly time and knowing the best products.

i wouldn't pay for a decorator but can see why some people do

Rollers are a royal arse-ache. Gloss is another one i hate doing, it's like painting with treacle.
