I live people saying that, normally when trying to sell a high mileage car.
It does not in any way feel like a 50k car.

well i have had a car with 50k miles and everything was "tight". no vagueness in steering, suspension etc and i have also had a scorpio with over 300k on it that was just a wallowing heap. gearbox was like stirring porridge. its all down to how they are maintained

but surely a car with 500 miles on will feel like that aswell? seems strange why you just plucked the 50k number out of the air.

it was more a random number and was simply to represent a figure of lower mileage. i think you may be looking into it a bit too much. i can edit it to say a car with between 1- x miles ( x being whatever the internetz deems to be just before high mileage)

With regards to renaults, my mum has a 2001 Clio 65 dci on 102k
Always been serviced myself for the past 7 years, biggest expense has bee. An alternator (due to pulley going) and egr (which was shagges for at least a year) other than that, one set of front brake pads and discs, 2 x rears, one rear shock and 2 x ball joints for MOTs and rear light due to faulty earth. Never had a timing belt change either which I really should do

Corsa B 1.5 diesel, near 200k miles, still goes without missing a beat and get roughly 70mpg.

i have a 2004 2litre tdci mondeo, just about to click over 170k never ever had any hassle with it, feels just like my mates with 100k less on it, and average 55-65mpg the 30k i've done in it only needed tyres, oil changes and a pair of arb drop links,
the thing is to remember regular oil changes.

IIRC they have pug engines in them. And pug diesels are decent afaik.
I wanted one but was told that i either get a find a place to rent and get any car or get a decent car and continue not to pay rent

I do all the work on my neighbours focus diesel. 180k and engine pulls like a train, absolutely mint.
I wouldn't worry about the engine, its the rest that tends to fall apart on high milers.

I have a X reg Skoda Octavia as my work car, does 2000+ miles a month, returns excellent MPG and goes quite well thanks to a tuning box. 215k, engine wise is perfect. Suspension is a bit soft now though
