I'm currently driving the new focus 1.6 diesel at the moment and is a great car on fuel it has also got the auto start / stop. There's ways you can make it do it ect but normally the minute you stop after around 5 seconds the engine cuts and the minute you put the clutch back in to select the gear and pull off it starts again. Its hard to say if it helps as since ive started using it i only drive 3 miles as that how close my work is and i have to drive through the town so its been dropping to around 43 MPG any way

On a serious note, my commute is 70/30 town/b road so that probably explains why my average MPG is quite low for a diesel

At what distance ect does a diesel break into its own. I'm ordering a new car soon and am stuck between the 2 engine options, im not really that bothered about performance as such, dont want it deadly slow just nippy enough to over take ect.

The 2 engines are the 1.6 TDCI or a 1.6 petrol both return good MPG diesel obviously has more, but the car will cost more to buy.

My new work locations is a fairly straight uninterrupted 10 mile journey so 20 miles aday, what would be the best the diesel or as its quite a short journey the petrol as its cheaper at pump and £400 cheaper to buy

Driving like you stole it in a 1.6 diesel Alfa is probably what you have to do just to keep up with the traffic TBH.

Why would it?

Even if the engine was just as economical, you spend time warming it up up, clearing windows etc so it ends up less economical.

I've always got worse mpg in winter.

Surely an engine operates more efficiently the hotter it is.

Vectra is similar - a £70-odd tank of fuel lasts no more than 3 days for me.

Fuel economy? Pffft.

No, because it's not a daily driver

Did spend near on £250 in fuel in the first 5 days I had it though...

Edit - poor maths... haha

I don't switch my engine off in traffic, try to stick to about 70 MPH and about 2.5k - 3k RPM.

On my commute of 1 hour 15 mins ish i get about 46 MPG. (1.6 Turbo Mini Works)

I get about the same mileage out of my tank so either you've got a smaller tank than me or one of us is working out their MPG wrong
