Doesn't really matter. Newest doesn't mean best.

Correct.

If picture qualitys your thing, for the same price, I'd always go for a high end CCFL backlit set over a low LED backlit one (which it will be for under £400).

If you're into showing off to your friends about how thin your TV is then go for the LED backlit one.

I love how thin my TV is.

A was sitting at the other side of the room at the weekend admiring it, you don't notice when sitting straight on like I normally do.

Tim, if you find anything can you post it up please. I'm in the market for the same thing. I do want to shy away from Plasma as it will be going in a small room which gets hot enough anyway as my one gets so hot and my room is much bigger. 42" Plasma is 4 years old and still going strong for the sake of the thread btw.

I'm sure I saw one on TV yesterday at Currys, 42" LG for £380 but I can't find it on the website

You are mistaken!

As it is a plasma it suffers horribly from image retention, uses enormous amounts of electricity and will produce enough heat to turn any living room in to a steam bath.

Always nice to be up to date though, I want an led next because they're thinner and lighter than my lcd.
Do led's use less power and give off less heat?

Contrast ratio on a plasma is better and thats about it.. In every other way they are inferior to LED and LCD...

I'll bet they suffer the same fate as the common lightbulb i.e. EU will make them illigal to import because they are energy inefficient.

They still sell because there are still manufacturers out there with a production line to make them and while there is still a profit they will still build them but you only have to look at compariable prices to realise the LCD/LED's are almost more expensive.

Fact 1:
Plasma uses more power than LCD (LED)
TRUE!

Fact 2:
Plasma uses SIGNIFICANTLY more power than LCD (LED)
FALSE!

A simple check of the manufacturers homepages will tell you what the energy efficiency of each TV model is.

Lets look at an example from LG:

A 42" plasma (P) vs. a 42" LCD with LED backlight (L).

Power consumption:
P: 129 W
L: 90,8 W

Difference:
38 W or 0,038 kW

Price of 0,038 kW for one hour:
0,038 kWh * 0,1 £ p.kWh. = 0,0038 £ p.h.

Let's say your TV runs 4 hours a day, all year round:
4 h.p.d. * 365 d. = 1460 h.

1460 h. * 0,0038 £ p.h. = 5,55 £ savings pr. year by choosing LCD opposed to plasma

Yes, Davey, I think your right. A EU ban of plasmas seems eminent!

Would you say 38 W is a significant amount of energy?

Bought this:

http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Plasma-TVs/buy-SAMSUNG-PS43D450A2-Plasma-TV/705543

Got it for £329 on price match as Currys were out of stock and Argos are delivery only. It will do. Its replacing a 4yr old 32" Technosonic LCD so anything is better than that. Have now upgraded Sky to HD and being fitted on friday. Will be a massive improvement.
