Although I wouldn't want them putting it up, if you can't afford the £1.50 increase on a £35 a month contract you probably shouldn't have a £35 a month phone contract.

I disagree with the principal of putting up prices during a fixed term contract irrelevant of whether an individual can afford the increase or not. I understand its in the T&Cs but when Phone companies issue the profits that they do, standing out until the end of what at most would be a 24month contract term isn't going to have a huge effect to them.
Imagine you took out a contract on Saturday and then finding out it'll be going up the day after signing on the dotted line.

where do you limit the increase as well - if inflation shot up to 15% overnight (as it did in the 80's), could Orange conceivably increase it in the same manner or is there a percentage limit?
As I read the T&C extract on page 1, is it limited to 5.4% or is it just saying that this increase is below the current RPI of 5.4%?

That's what the right to cancel is there for.
I completely agree it doesn't manage expectation and it's not the way I would do business, but there has to be a breakpoint somewhere and I bet is easier to deal with a few moans on the phone and implement a contract term than to tell everyone individually that the price has gone up when they renew, when they will also be expecting a good deal.
At least this is clear and legal and not really open to debate. Having sales staff trying to sneak in a few extra pound to the deal is the alternative and probably not as easy.

I'm not debating the right to increase, its clear and simple and covered by T&Cs whether they've been read or not, the point I was making was possibly unclear - I didn't mean 'find out' about the rise 2 days after taking out a contract, I meant being informed' of a planned rise that quickly after signing up to a contract would leave a bitter taste surely
