I'm still struggling to see how it was going to be spread over 2 films, let alone 3.
The only thing I can think of is the battle at the end will be given a big section of the film. I think Gandalf disappears off for a bit too.

They're adapting the story to be more of a prequel to LOTR.
Apparently Tolkien had planned to rewrite The Hobbit to make it a lot bigger and less of a childrens book. Peter Jackson holds the rights to several hundres of published and unpublished pages of notes that Tolkien made about what Gandalf was up to and how everything ties in with Sauron's rise and what ever else is going on in LOTR.
This is also the explanation for a couple of returning characters, that were never in The Hobbit.
I don't see this as anything other than a matter of making more money out it.
I'm curious to see if Peter Jackson's vast knowledge of the franchise will help him tell a great story or if will be a Matrix-ish trilogy of rapidly declining quality...

I can't help but think what Del Toro could have made of it. The Faun in Pans Labyrinth and the Angel & King Balor in Hellboy II were so cool.

After the abortion that was the first installment, I can't say I'm too excited about the sequel.
Wtf is up with Legolas' eyes?
Wtf is also up with the overuse of obvious CGI? A couple of clips look like they're out of an animated film, not live action.

Hobbit was dreadful. Genuinely the only bit I liked was them showing the dwarf mines as they where before they where deserted.
The rest was jaw droppingly bad. Including redoing the single most important/iconic moment in the LOTR story even when they filmed it "properly" for fellowship. Now doesnt match and was totally pointless.
Second one best be an improvement

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 6/10
Beautiful! It looks absolutely stunning.
However, the story feels disjointed and at times incredibly slow.
The film spends 30 minutes introducing the dwarves but does such a piss poor job that you never feel any sense of connection to anybody except their leader who incidentally seems to suffer from some form of bi-polar disorder.
It should have been 40 minutes shorter.
It's worth watching, just don't expect too much.
Worth it just for the visuals alone, if you enjoy a good looking film.

I still think it could have been one 2.5-3hr film. No way is there enough for a trilogy. Having read the book years ago I'm struggling to see 3 movies worth.
I'll be watching parts 2 & 3 (maybe even 4 & 5 ) in 2D as 3D was too blurry as the camera panned and made me feel sick.
