I have a bottom drawer stuffed with all my important documents.
If someone steals or burns them I couldn't give a flying fuck.

You only have house deeds if you've paid your mortgage off and then paid to get them. Even then they are mostly useless now because it's all computerised.

Nothing, I probably could just about scrape £100 of mine together from the house in cash, I don't see why anybody would keep wods of cash stowed away unless it's dodgy money.
I'd rather the bank have it or put it into Premium Bonds in chance of winning something.

I have my deeds
Solicitors down here don't hold them anymore, you get them when you exchange contracts

this - neither solicitors nor banks no longer hold deeds
They used to until you pay your mortgage off - now they issue them 4 weeks after completion

Is it different up here? My mum and dad got them when the mortgage was paid off. They weren't released until then.
http://scotland.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_topics/finding_a_place_to_live/buying_a_home/title_deeds
Didn't know it was different in England, sorry.
quote:
If you have a mortgage, your mortgage lender will keep the title deeds to your home as security against the loan. If you ever need to see the deeds (for example, to check the boundaries of your property or to find out about shared responsibilities for repairs), ask your solicitor and they will arrange this for you. Once your mortgage is fully paid up, the deeds will be returned to you, although you'll have to pay a charge to get them back. You can ask for a photocopy of your deeds at any time but you might be charged for this so find out the cost in advance.
