I already have a house this is another house
In total would be around 400k after selling this one, didn't want want to write a massive list so tried to keep it simple, although really I should have just put 400k

250k is a 3 bed semi-detached corner plot round here, not very ambitious

Why have a mortgage and not pay it off? I know the interest from keeping more money in the bank is better than the interest over paying a mortgage longer term, but I'd rather pay it now knowing I could afford it.

If I won £1m I'd probably just pay off my mortgage, get a nice car, give some to my family. Then just carry on as normal with the rest in the bank for holidays and other luxuries. £1m isn't much these days, certainly not enough to quit work.

£1m is barely even a portfolio. Still Filofax territory.

Would have to spend around £800k to get close to what I want round here.
Would rather have the cash to make money off rather than just have £200k left

I see your point, imagine the Porsche after winning the lotto though !
I really have no idea what cars I would have, probably a range with all the trimmings and a few sports cars.

I'd be happy with a modest house such as : http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34894894.html
And a couple of nice cars, like an RR and some sort of baby Aston. Then have about £400k in the bank whilst working a 4 day week.
Easy life.

I was reading some of the replys thinking wtf, surley 1m is enough for most people to quit their job.
for me @25k i would have to work 40 years to earn 1m. without paying tax.
i retire in 42 years ( i think) so i would quit my job buy a modest house and a modest car.
But I forgot some cs members make 50k+

Portfolios galore on here. It's barely even worth some people playing the lotto.

Pretty much my attitude.
If I won the £1m, I wouldn't even tell people I'd won. I'd bank the money, maybe I'd wait a few weeks and tell my friends / family I had just won 5 + bonus on normal lottery - act really generous like giving my sister £30k out of my '£140k winnings'
Then since people thought I had only won £140k I'd behave like I had only won £140k, few luxuries but nothing over the top... but ultimately secretly have £1 mil in the bank. heh
I would definitely keep working, probably still programming related but may change where I work.

If you gave your sister 30k you would only have £970k in the bank though

£1 million is more than enough to facilitate leaving employment.
If you believe otherwise you don't have the werewithall to make it work.

I could quit working for the man for a mil.
You couldn't splash it all on a house and a Porsche and have no income, but if you didn't get all giddy and start doing things to impress all your magic new friends, you'd be OK I'm sure.

if I won 1mil though, I'd not get rid of my corsa whatsoever, I might buy a toy, maybe even a motorbike, I'd then spend every penny making the corsa 100% up to scratch with a nice c20LET to compete with even Nic Barnes.
I'd spend about 250k on a modest house and buy about 2-3 businesses with the remaining to give me an income for life. Gotta be smart

Obviously burn the 70s decor, but nothing too flashy, just a big-ish driveway to park a selection of dailys and some agricultural buildings you store the rest of the fleet.
I wouldn't stop working but I wouldn't continue making other people rich.
