I guess I could call fell aswell. Just seems this forum rep is sorting it out no hassle for people.

Maybe I will have to quote that to them?

I hate ringing for shit like this as I always feel like I'm unprepared for the questions and how to give the best answer to get what I want. Always get off the phone and think fuck why did/didn't I say that lol.

Another prediction wrong!

Called. Guy said your warranty is out. You can pay to extend it. I said no, told him about the thread on dell support forum. He straight away said ok we can repair it free of charge. Took details and has sent a service collection for it.

Pick up tomorrow. Return 8-10 days

RESULT

Right. I'm now gonna shoot and get a caddy cause my eBay one won't be here in time.

Seeing as I will get a laptop back with an os installed at the least. Do I just plug in both my hdd and my external hdd to another laptop and transfer files/folders I want to keep?

Seems pointless cloning it if I can just copy/paste the stuff I don't want to lose.

Just backup the data you want/need to another system or drive. As you say, no point cloning the whole drive as majority of it will be of no use to you.

Edit - If it's anything dodge then i'd remove it as well.

Yup but i would also remove anything personal, like pic of the missus/bank details/phone backups etc

No saying anyone will go through it but it does happen unfortunately.

Is it only recent? From about 2010 back everyone says nothing but negative things for out of warranty stuff. All send them to retailer.

Be over the moon when I get it back. Hoping they do actually reformat like he said they might. Will save me a job as it was going slow

They won't just replace anything out of warranty, if you are a few months over and it's broken that's tough luck.

If just over or it's a known issue, which can be years over, they are fine.

They are actually starting to tighten up a bit just now.

Although I kinda agree it's tough luck out of warranty. But for something costing 500 I expect it to last a reasonable time if looked after. Is 15 months really a reasonable time?

From the state of a lot of the laptops I see 15 months is doing really well.

They should last longer than that though. I always go for 3 year NBD dell warranty, can't beat it.

If they guarantee their product for 12 months they're as good as saying it'll last that long with no issues. It's usually quite sensible to take out an extended warranty with a computer as you'll probably want it to last for a fair bit longer than that.
