It almost seems as it should have all been a foot higher up the wall.
I would grip fill / no nails some 2x2 batten above and below and too the side this will give you something to anchor too, then MDF the top and bottom out, then use some more 2x as noggin between the top and bottom then just put a hinged flip down door with a click in lock.

batten like this to give you a frame anchor, then screw MDF down onto it

Looks like a TT to me. With the supply cable being that high on a wall it's likely to come overhead. And the upfront rcd in the board points towards TT as well. Although there's a cable tapped off the neutral and into a Henley block next to the cutout that could be a TN-CS upgrade?
If was me I'd be rearranging that lot, but certainly not a job for the DIYer.
Like others have said buy a kitchen cupboard, chop the back out and make it shallower that should hide it.

I'd say build a small cupboard to put over it but then you're compromising on space when using the stairs..

I see what you mean, surely Barnsley isn't a TT area though? Unless he lives out the way? Your right about the incomer though it does look like it loops under coming from above.
As said I'd maybe use a cut down kitchen carcass and no more nails around it. Trust me it won't ever 'Fall' off as it will hardly get used.

Haha yes its going to be painted. All the stairwell is getting repainted has my girlfriend runs her hand down side if the wall as she walks down, like a child.

Some people pay shit loads for that kind of shit look Ben! It'll be right once painted.
Started to feel a bit like in limbo with our house now as its small and ideal for our current situation but not big enough for the future.Reckon it would need about 5k to get every room done but think it wouldnt really add much value to it.

Not always about adding value, some people can't see past the cosmetic state and want to move into somewhere that's been decorated, more chance of a sale too IMO

Infact, I would run some caulk round the gaps at the edges. Shadows stand out quite a lot

Looks better but I'd be losing the handles and fitting a push to close mechanism. Will make it look more modern IMO. Won't cost much either.

Push to close things are only a few pounds. Then just take the handles off, fill the holes and paint.

Filled them, ready to paint. I dont need the push fit thing as the door over laps so can open it from the bottom easily and its not something that will used regular.
Plenty of room its only about 15cm depth, just thought on though it was tight getting beds up etc before, will have to take it off for sure if have to get anyrhing big up.
