They're not shit really, my brother's just been unlucky. His is an E39, it's currently having its 4th engine fitted. It was on its second box when he bought it and he had to get it rebuilt earlier this year. He paid £1400 for the car and he's since paid £1700 on the box and one engine. He did ignore a leak which led to the box running dry hence needing the rebuild so not entirely the car's fault but engines, do a search for BMW nikasil engine and you'll find all the details. If it's on a nikasil block DON'T buy it, you want alusil, there's pics about to help you identify it.
