It wasnt stupidly over priced, just Amazon didnt bother paying tax so they could price everything lower and still make more profit.

Albums have always been £15 ish and singles about £4, nothing has changed.

I've never enjoyed looking in HMV, nothing was ever organised, but then I guess when you sell hundreds of thousands of tiny items in one place it always is going to be difficult to keep it organised, so much easier just to type it in a search box and pay less for it

edit - thats not to say it is a shame to see it go, one of the icons of the high street

When you can download a 12 song album from iTunes for £9.50ish at 79p a song, why would I want to pay a shop £5.50 more? If they were the same price/slightly more I'd support HMV no problem, but they is a 50% increase on practically everything

Anyway, I never knew that the name came from a trademark of RCA (who sold to EMI), which used to be 'Victor' which then became JVC!

What are gift cards and vouchers? Fabricated items by HMV, they can do as they wish with them.

Should be regulated. ie for every voucher you sell you must have the cash stored away to honour it

Morally they should be yeah but it's fairly simple, they offered a gift card or voucher (which they withhold the right to refuse) in exchange for money.

They have went into administration i.e. they are no under different control and they can refuse to honour them if they wish.

Once under the creditor as the owner of a gift card, HMV owe you money, however at that point you're at the bottom of the list.

Last time i checked iTunes gives you lossy material, so an extra couple a quid for lossless is fine by me.

Compressed so as to lose bits to make the file smaller.

Gift cards are just a debt to you and yes, there's probably a long list in front of you. I would think the banks have more chance of getting back some money from the closing down sale than customers do.

times have changed, and some companies just failed to keep up

I havent been in a music store for 6-7 years, nevermind the last time I spent anything at HMV

However, I do feel for those who are out of a job now. I have a lot of mates who worked for Comet (I used to work there 8 years ago during my Uni years) and they have struggled to find work... and been left to fend for themselves

Wonder who will be next?

Can't imagine DSG (Dixons group, Currys, PC world, Dixons) will be doing too well, although they are pretty much the only electrical suppliers left on the high street (or retail parks) so probably get 90% of those sales
