Indeed, they've been building more sympathy for him and I imagine taking away his fighting ability is another step towards a "better" Jaime.
Good thing too, between Jaime Lannister and Hannibal Lecter we could do with some one slightly more "human" to be portrayed by a Dane.

The series are done by the books. Each book represents a character. soon it will mainly been more about one person than another. They are doing a good job with it but some things are portrayed different. Rob stark was never a main character in the book the stories were from his mothers point of view. Still i love the series they do a great job of making it look and feel more real. Plus constant nakedness is a win
