How are you defining weekend toy?
IMO an Aston isn't a weekend toy. Unless your toying involves driving 4 people to a restaurant

I'd get a BMW Z8 if he can afford it, can't see them losing much money.

Just something special he can take out on nice days. Something which would make the journey an occasion.

Yeah, the Z8's are super rare. I've still never seen one on the road. Not a bad suggestion to be honest.
They're quite subtle too. Only a car fan would really notice it. Everyone else would just think it's a Z3 with a weird kit. Although that could be a bad thing.
He's never been much of a BMW fan, but the Z8 could be a different story.

Don't agree with that at all.
Have you actually seen one in person? Nothing "hairdresser" about it at all, imo. On the contrary, I'd say.

Yeah, I saw one at Goodwood and it's just too dainty/pretty. Okay it's no MGF, but in my opinion it's not the most manly of cars.

I know what you mean. Not much road presence. A bit forgettable.

Because it looks even more girly than a Z4

Where can you take them to get serviced? And where do you get spares?
That's the biggest problem with something obscure like this.

Thought they used an audi engine? Getting parts for servicing shouldn't be too hard, it's the other bits which might though

The thing my dad likes most about Porsche is that there is a Porsche garage 15 miles from here so maintaining a FPSH isn't a problem.
Ferrari, Lambo, Maseratti, Aston would mean a trip to Edinburgh but that's do-able. I can't see him going for anything as different as a Spyker or a Mosler.
I know it's more than the budget outlined in the original post, but a Carerra GT could actually be a viable option.
However that's pushing it close to F40 money and I think they'd be a better investment.

E30 M3? Miles under budget, and will continue to go up in value.

I know, but the budget isn't really a budget or a limit. It was more just a guideline for initial suggestions.
If he's going to be able to sort out decent storage and it was going to be a serious investment then something like an GT or F40 could be the wiser choice. Probably more so the F40 as they'll just continue to rise in value whereas the GT will probably just hold for years to come. F40 would be far more expensive to maintain though.

I'm not so sure I agree. I can't see them going much higher than they are now.

Damn right. That's always been my dad's dream too and he was severely tempted to get one back in the day when they were around the £500k mark, but that would have bankrupted him back then. Shame he didn't just take the gamble.
How to turn £640k into £4+ million in 17 years.
