reading "quick" as "fun" why not a Classic Mini??
a dozen or more on Piston heads coming under £4k, very easily to play with, plenty of parts still available...

Get something you can only just afford then fix it up with cheapo parts and then moan about it online being problematic. Deem that type of car as shit and everyone else will repeat what some random has said to other people. Meaning all those types of cars will have the same problems and are basically shit.

Agree with you 3CM, forum full of people buying bad examples of cars that are already at the top of budget then deciding that all of that model must be bad
Clio and save a bit, as much as I disliked mine, for bombing about in whilst still having good mpg and being fun if pushed, can't be beaten. Or a Megane right enough.
Wouldn't want a 2.5 Boxster which is all you'd get in that price range I think, and it won't be a good one.

Incidentally, just because my budget is 4.5k, that doesn't mean that's all the money I have. That's all I'm willing to spend on buying the car

Have they dropped yet? Any time I've looked in the past 5 years they've been at exactly the same price as they were the first time.

Not to mention that a diesel is a shocking idea for a 6 mile round trip each day

Supercharged Toyota Corolla? Didn't even know they existed until yesterday.
Toyota Celica T-Sport?
Currently in a similar situation, looking at a cheapy 140 Celica though.

Daimo, there was one a few doors down from my old work, cool looking car it was, made a decent noise too but apparently they're crap to drive

If you get one of them for 4k that won't need lots of work then it's a good shout.
I've done 4 cv boots on mine so far (knew it needed them) and one of the front springs broke the other day so both of those will be replaced at the weekend. If you can use a spanner it's pretty easy to work on.

In competent enough to do most stuff. The only thing I'd worry about is the engine going bang but that could happen with anything I suppose.
