Is there any way you can 'cheat' it into life with a spray of Easy Start or similar?

If you say there's a spark, fuel and compression and its trying to go, I'd take out all the plugs, unplug the fuel pump relay and just crank over the engine a few times just to get rid of the fuel in the cylinders. Plugs and relay back in and give it a whirl again.

Don't give up, just have 10, think about it properly and have another crack at it. The night is young and all that...
