that's because there a lump of shite haha
on my lunch so thought id do a quick update
got the head stripped down, managed to do 6 exhaust valves and that was it surprisingly
however it has snapped a cam cap :@
cams stripped out
Valves and springs out
Bent valve anyone?
This is how coked up these engines get after 40000 miles
out comes the lapping paste
checking the inlet valves for bends
all was fine on that side
Snapped cam cap
Now the cam cap causes a massive problem
because these engines are inline bored you cant buy the cam caps on there own from anywhere
meaning in most cases it would be a new head
however a friend of mine owns a machine shop, and can make me a new cap, inline rebore the whole lot and get it back to me saveing a good few hundred quid
it does however take around 10-12 days for him to get it done
so now its a waiting game

We've sorted a few heads at work where people have lost a cap, (some how I never understand how)
Skimming them all then line boring them all is hassle and a right arse of a job lol!
The amount of coke in the is insane, I blame egr crap.

Get my valve tool soon, so i can see my 200,000mile valves
How do you clean them up? am thinking of buying an ultrasonic cleaner to do mine, About £80 for the one i want.

Gaz it's pretty much the same thing but we have to have a cap made before they all get skimmed and bored
And 3cm I think you would be surprised at how little coke shite will be on there. It's probably had abit of abuse in its past meaning it won't have as much shite in there as you would expect
Oh and as for cleaning them. Either painstaking long way of doing it with a screwdriver and some scotch pad. Or just do what I do and wire wheel them gently. Takes about 5 mins to do all 16. But wear a mask!!

Got an ultrasonic cleaner the other day, its amazing tbh, will post proper before and after pics at some point, but its the best £80 i've spent in a while.
This was the state of them, pic is taken after i've tried sanding the shite off, tried wire brush, wire wool and even started trying to scrape it off with a stanley blade but wouldn't shift.

The one you sold?
I'm still waiting for the head to come back for this. Rolling it in and out of the garage every morning and night is annoying me now

ok will do, i was under the impression they just slide in and are held in by a screw bung type thing?
the method iv seen used is to undo the screw cap, pull out the pre tensioner, push the new one in then wind the crank around to find slack at the back of the chain until you can push it in, put the cap back on

Ahh shit In thinking of the new ones. The new ones are basically a rod with a thread on the end and a Allen key. So you push it in then screw it and it screws on to the correct tension. Sorry Steve my mistake

I can't link the image as I'm on my phone. But this is the tensioner in the new engines. They wobble loose so I've been told to lock tight it back up when I re fit

They don't (well they do but not with this engine) I was being a spastic and talking about the 1.4/1.6 HDI diesel.

So, this is a petrol engine and doesn't affect that list then?!
Can't say I've heard of such problems on the Zetec S 1.6 TDCi Fiesta for example...
