Depends on the dog, when I take my mum and dads in any car he just plants himself and that's it, doesn't move.

If you've got something small that wants to jump about then yes, probably should be restrained in some fashion.

In all my years of driving and all the miles I've done I can honestly say I have never had a tab end land on my scuttle panel or windscreen while driving.

Dog Guards then?

My other halfs mum has one of those in her qashqai.

We were driving up to their caravan in the highlands and suddenly their labrador jumped into the guard and knocked it down. Shit the life out of me as I was half asleep.

True story, even if barnes doesn't believe it.

Exactly "my dog would never do that, my dog would never bite etc" really pisses me off, yes it may be out of character of your dog, but don't take it as fkin gospel.

I'm sure raoul moats mum didn't say "he will go on a rampage and shoot a police officer on the face" and he could speak english

Our dog is a twat, and still tries to climb up even with the Guard in place - I leave half of my Load cover down and he can't do it then.

If you're making it impossible for the dog then obviously that's fine. If its an average car it should be banned IMO, no matter what dog it is.

What if a dig owner is passing another car, and dog starts barking at it and running to front of car, that would be distracting

Agreed. You can't use your phone or eat so why should you be able to smoke? [/quote

I cant see how having a fag while driving should be banned? You have both hands on the steeringwheel (only taking one off to take a drag) and your concentration levels dont change? Its completely different to being on the phone.

1) It raises your blood pressure.

2) It fills the car with smoke, which although a minor hinderance, is still restricting visibility (especially if you get smoke or ash directly in your eye/s).

3) There is always a chance, no matter how slight, of dropping a lit cigarette on yourself, or into the footwell, console, door pocket, seat etc. etc. etc.

4) Unless cleaned off, smoking leaves a residue that contaminates the inside of a vehicle's windows, worsening night time visibility (especially in winter).

5) To smoke whilst driving, requires the use, or partial use of a hand or hands, for a period of time, to do something other than controlling the car.

Also and quite incidental to any legal or safety orientated issues, smoking ruins the interior of any car and negatively impacts it's resale value. So it makes good practical and financial sense not to do it.

I don't do drugs (in the conventional use of the word) before somebody says alcohol is drugs etc.

What makes you say that mate.

A few years ago I was in a head-on crash with someone who was trying to light a fag while driving. Needless to say I'm in the 'it should be banned' club, but also SVM 286 covered it all rather well. It's a distraction and should be as legal as phone use etc.

Best ban kids in cars too then. A brat in the back kicking off is more of a distraction than having a cig.

Tbf you can't really adjust the seat (easily) while driving unless it's electric, as otherwise you just fly backwards Unless you mean the back part etc, in which case you'd be able to let go of that and leave it pretty sharpish if a situation came up that required both hands, but with a fag you're either still holding it and concious that it's hot etc, or risk dropping it.

You what?

I'd love to agree with you, but how do you go about putting larger dogs in cages? Does every dog owner need to buy a van?

We have a dog guard, a divider and a crate/cage in ours as the younger one chews the car and the older one likes to climb

I've never heard of a dog causing an accident, but I recall reading that it's fairly common, in cases of head on collisions, for unsecured luggage, and and very often dogs as well, to fly through the car and injur/kill people in the front seats.

Also banning cigarettes...
If people are too stupid to not flick cigarette butts at passing cars, then the issue is much more fundamental than what a ban can fix.

What's next? You want to ban porn from the internet because people are too stupid to properly enforce rules on their own kids? Oh, wait...
