Running in service
SMG is simple enough. Either blip of throttle or lift off throttle when changing gear and it stops the julting.
Dad had an SMGII E46 M3 many moons ago. Then did a driving experience in a manual version to save ragging his around the race track.
He preferred the manual for fun. And the auto in the SMG is pretty shocking. Only ideal for slow moving traffic.

Cheers Mister Nut
Oh and HOLY SHIT FUCKING JESUS!!!!! IT'S THE SODDING SHELL THAT CRACKS. not the subframe!
WHAT THE FUUUCKKK!!! Did the Bavarians subcontract the body shells out to De Havilland or something?
I've never heard or seen anything like it!
And to think i've wanted one of these for years.
I'd have torn the arse out of it by now.

That is shocking.
But I'm just going to go out there and say.... How the FUCK can you not notice that whilst driving before it got like that?! My RTABs where on way out and I hated driving it, worried it would be dangerous or unpredictable...

To be honest, the owner is a knob for not even realising before it got to that state. It's inevitable that something that's started to crack is going to get like that eventually. It's just most normal people realise and get it fixed.
It really shouldn't put anyone off buying one, you really need to drive one and see what it's about. Ideally on track really but it does depend what you want to use it for. I lost count of how many E46 M3's were at Nurburgring this weekend, such capable cars

As well as being fixed, they're usually strengthened - I believe BMW use a resin and other companies add extra welds (don't quote me on that though)
I had mine inspected by an Indy that I use for numerous bits and they knew what I was on about and said it was all clear, but I still have that niggle in the back of my mind. Will get it up in the air myself at some point to check. If it does need doing I'll be going to Redish but sod driving 2.5 hours just to find out whether it needs fixing or not

Mine is due to go into BMW next week to be done, according to the garage I've bought it from.
Initially, if it was a small crack, BMW just used to inject resin and only replace the boot floor/subframe on the severely effected models. However, they now just replace the floor anyway and then inject the resin to protect it. I don't believe that they do any extra welding.

Do 36s suffer with this as well, or is it just the 46s?
Christ, imagine what the one with the paper boot floor must go like!!!

TBF my 1 Series service was £500 last month. I'd pay an extra £200 every 18 months to own something much better.

Plus that service is only every 30,000 miles. Not exactly a hardship.
Inspection 1 £300
7500 miles later an oil change if you DIY £70, Garage maybe £100 or so
7500 after that Inspection 2 £700 (you can get it cheaper nowadays)
7500 after that oil service again
Back to inspection 1
It really isn't that bad

Nice one Jam I can see the values of 36s and 46s doing a bit of a switcharoo
Shame about the Z3s Always fancied a Z3 M breadvan too

Or not, as i've found out today. The garage I bought it from have their info wrong and BMW won't honour the claim, although the garage has knocked off £1k and i'll look at taking it to Redish to get it done. It does mean that i'm going to check the car more thoroughly tomorrow though.
