Got a car on 88k here mate, pretty high mileage for me, it doesn't feel like it only has 20k miles on it. The 76k vectra also doesn't feel like it's got half the miles, it feels like it's done 76k.

Sitting at a specific RPM it's whole life is also not very good for the engine.

Sitting in a narrow rev range, at a fairly constant temperature is very, very, very good for an engine!

What is bad for an engine is being driven 2 minutes up the road and back day in and day out.

We have an Audi A3 at work, 2010 model with 75k miles on it.

Drives crap.

My 130k mile 06 Fabia drives lovely.

We have a 2012 Touran with about 5k miles on it, drives lovely.

We have a combo with 155k miles on it, drives like a bag of spanners.

Condition will vary from car to car, but I have had high milers and no problems with them, yet tons of problems with low mileage cars.

Just the luck of the draw.

I know of a few cars that do this, very very low mileage, including one in my own household. Guess what, never had a problem.

Is that because you're paranoid, or just because you want to drive a nice new car about?

Mines done 100k and most of the things attached to it have fallen apart.

Its because the higher the mileage the more it has been used.

There are conditions in which this might be slightly beneficial with a higher mileage. But the fact is, you are far far far safer buying a low miler than an old heap.

I like driving nice new cars about. Probably going to be getting something with about 80k on the clock in the next few months though which is going to be a bit of a change

It's good from a convenience side of things and having a nice new car is good obviously. But I need to free up some money so I'll have to get an older car and hope I don't have too many problems with it

So do a lot of things but we're talking about cars.

Plus lorries end up with ridiculous miles on them so further pisses on Johns logic.

Doesn't piss on my logic. Lorry engines are built for that purpose.

Although a car will be just fine anyway, the sitting at a certain RPM was in response to Davey's going to the shops post.

You could have a high or low mileage car that's good or bad, same as always.

Also same as always, Davey and you can buy the older crapper ones and I'll continue buying the low mileage ones instead. Everyone is happy.

My theory is.. If you don't do many miles buying a modern high mileage car makes sense!

Here's the science bit:

1) When you come to sell it its likely to be not so high mileage or even average miles so the can actually depreciation work out in your favour.
2) Its likely to be a lease car which means a no expenses spared service history.
3) Being a regularly serviced car also means all of the re-calls will have been carried out so its going to be a 'safer car'..
4) Any weak points are also more likely to have been discovered before you bought it!

And of course its going to cost you a hell of a lot less to buy!

Never bought anything with more than 40k on. Tend to keep our cars 3 year minimum so this puts it around 65-70k when it's time to sell. Would be ready for the scrap yard after 3 years if we bought one with 70k on.

It also depends on what you want/need from a car.

Everything i own ends up fucked due to work etc so i'd rather have something that i dont have a lot of money in.

I'd love to drive around in something newer and unpractical but I cant warrant running two cars
