The weather and the damned economy by having little economic income other than tourism and an alcoholic beverage?

Greece - Tourism and Ouzo.
Ireland - Tourism and Guiness.
Spain - Tourism and Wine.
Scotland - Tourism and Whisky.

Splitting from the UK would be probably benefit the remaining UK, see how long your free prescriptions and university education last without Westminster to subsidise it. In fact, take Wales whilst you're at it.
