Apparently there is an app called AVIA that allows you to cast from any DLNA device:

Most TV's have a USB socket on them.

got one for £18 in Currys on black friday, very easy to install and for that price its good not many apps netflix, iplayer but no amazon can add plex the being able to cast (beta) your phone/tablet screen is only ok, video and sound is very jumpy. Allcast on the Roku is much better as it works perfectly.

Unless they've fixed the 'deauth' exploit, it won't last long before smut is playing on the screen instead of advertising

I'd just stick it on it's own VLAN.

You don't have to be connected to the same network to 'deauthorise' the Chromecast and for it to switch into hotspot mode; so VLAN'ing, or even sticking it on its own WiFi network, would make little difference.
The 'RickMote' source-code is freely available on Git if you need to see how it's done

No. If you want something that is similarly packaged and can run XBMC/Koni then have a look at the various 'Chinese special' Android sticks; or alternatively keep an eye on the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Cheers Dom, mainly bought it for plex, xbmc/koni would have been a bonus.

Tbh, the Chromecast doesn't make for that great of a media player anyway considering it's output is fixed at 60Hz and Google aren't interested in fixing it (it's likely to be a hardware issue anyway) to allow 50Hz output for EU markets.

Hopefully it'll do the job, it's only for a bedroom.

I'm not sure how this is an actual problem?
All of my TV's support 60fps?

Its not frames per second, its the refresh rate, cycles per second.
Put a 60hz refresh rate signal through a 50hz tv and you will get stuttering.
If your tvs support 60hz then cool, but most PAL TV's that I have ever seen are 50hz

PS. a 100hz tv will still stutter with a 60hz signal

It's a problem when you want to play 24*/25/50fps footage (ie - what we shoot in the UK) as it means you have to start interpolating (worse case you double frames; best case you try and animate between frames, ie - motion interpolation) frames to fit it into the 60Hz cycle; hence stutter/judder.
*24fps doesn't fit 50Hz either but two frames isn't particularly noticeable.

I would have assumed being as its not the most powerful thing in the world it would just drop frames.. My misses just uses ours for iPlayer and I can't say I've noticed that the footage is particularly choppy..

Not sure what I want for a present from the Mrs for Christmas. When ever we want to watch catch up from the laptop, I have to plug it in to the a TV cable which is bit of a pain in the arse.
I've seen this but not sure if I can stream from my laptop? Windows 8.1?
I also saw Roku on Ebuyer, how does that compare?

Just read. Roku can't cast from a device (well it can, only Netflix and YouTube) but you don't need to, as it has all major streaming apps, so iPlayer, ITV Net Player, 4OD etc. Looks good.
Cheapest UK location is Currys it seems. £40 and you get a remote with it. Plus their app has a QWERTY keyboard for better searching.

If you're getting a Roku, for yourself (not as a present) you may as well get the NowTV box from Sky for £10 and put Plex on it, has a lot of the streaming options too. It's essentially a Roku box.
But as a gift, I would say a Roku would be suitable
