Had a play with the Nest in B&Q, seemed well put together and I love gadgets but couldn't figure out what benefit I'd get from it and therefore couldn't justify the price.

I didn't like the fact it's circular as it'd have to be wall mounted for me
Much prefer the aesthetics of the neostat by heatmiser.

It's a gadget which is why I got one, heating hasn't actually been on once since I fitted it.
Mine is wall mounted Ben, why does being circular matter? Also, why does it need wall mounted? It can go anywhere you can power it.

The thing that will put a lot of people off with nest is it has to be wired and not wireless RF like hive

Only wires nest needs is powered. The controller can connect wirelessly to the heatlink.

Current thermostat is a mechanical square one so to replace it, i'd need to find one the same size and shape.

My nest replaced the mechanical square one. Depends if it's mounted to a backbox though, mine was just screwed onto the wall.

You got a pic of it fitted, John?
Works out at £161 from B&Q with diamond discount, rather than £199 for Heatmisers neostat package 1.

The more I look at it the more I like it.
Very clever for BG to back it as they are gleaming so much usage data from it I am sure there is value in it.

The good thing about hive is that once you've got the 'hub' in your house it can be used for future developments and add ons...
The things that will be released as an add on in the future
Multi zones
Remote trv's
Alarm systems
Door entry/control
Lights/sockets
Plus a whole lot more that they are not releasing info on.

Would love to be able to switch the lights on from my phone whilst at work or out.
Amount of times i've came home in the dark and spent ages trying to open the front door

It will be interesting to see how they go on to expand it and also potentially open it up with an API.
If they opened it up via an API it would not surprise me if people started writing apps for responding to weather etc
Being able to turn off all the house lights would be hand so when you go to bed and realize something is still on its a 2 second job with the phone.

Thats the whole point of having it controlled remotely, so I can switch the outside light on before I get home

But a PIR outside light wouldn't do that automatically when you approached?
