I did plastering at a construction skills college; completely different to the office based job I was in and something at odds with all of the formal education I'd had to that point, A levels, degree etc. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a massive change of scene and whilst it's not something I want to make a career out of, it is something I enjoyed doing and something which I could fall back on if needs must.
What about advanced composites technology? Practical skills with lots of resources to hand, online tutorials, books and courses that are available.

Physics, maths, business, chemistry, engineering? Those would be before French.
Tbf, most things would be before french

That's probably different depending on what you want to do. Open uni is good for structured learning, with a possibilty of doing small bits at a time with a view to them adding up to a qualification. Not as much money as before but engineering still a pretty safe bet.

I started learning CAD about 4 years ago, just off my own back as I thought it may come in use and I can use aspects of it at work.
I am now able to do enough to create plans to accompany planning applications, be sent out to potential clients/ customers and have also now diverted in to using REVIT.
I have no professional qualifications in it, but it could be useful when looking for another job, and I have (nearly) always enjoyed it.
All I did was got a copy of Autocad, a cheap 'CAD for dummies' book, then subsequently one for REVIT and learnt from them and the internet, especially youtube.
Try it, could enjoy it.

So does it need to be a directly work related skill? Because in that case, you really need to figure out what you want to do before figuring out what you want to learn.
Can use CAD skills to just about fuck all in most sales related jobs.
Language is very rarely a deciding factor in getting a job.
Only universal skill I can think of is communication. You'd be surprised at how much you can achieve by just knowing basic communication and the psychology behind it.

Japanese is supposed to be an easy language to learn (assuming you learn via our alphabet).

Unless you want to use a CAD package for a living, don't bother learning it. It's a useful skill for personal projects but if you get to the stage where you need to be properly trained and your paying for it off your own back; you'll end up bankrupt.
Also, you don't want to use CAD for a living.

Its True.. When the language is 'Romanised' its pronounced EXACTLY as it is written and there is no complication of plurals and sexes.. Its a very simple language.

Kanji Japanese is one of the hardest, because of the alphabet..
Romanji is far, far, far simpler.

yes to do something else I just haven't a clue what which is the problem. More specifically I don't want to learn a manual skill.

Thought about taking some man-management classes? Sounds corny I know but it can be helpful if you want to progress in your career.

I've spent however many years since I left school doing manual jobs. I'm currently warm and dry, and quite happy in my current job, just fancy being able to better myself somehow.
