They often do have a pin code but it can be overridden from the cockpit to prevent access by someone who is inside. Ordinarily you can trust your flight crew so presumably it's not a common issue.
Also, most airlines enforce the rule that there has to be 2 people in the cockpit, so if the pilot leaves a flight attendant has to take their place, for circumstances similar to this or if the pilot nips off for a piss and the co pilot suffers a fatal heart attack, there's still someone to open the door.
The problem is, Lufthansa conform to German flight regs, where the 2 person rule does not apply!

The plane did have a pin code.
Apparently on the audio they could hear the captain trying to get in so they have said they can only presume that the co-pilot was pressing the stay locked button on the inside to block the captain

Always found that bit strange. Saw it last year. The stewardess closed the curtain, pilot came out, had a piss then went back in. Very strange considering the security threat.
There is on BA's 747's.

They do but it can be overridden.

That's mostly what is dispelling any suggestion of incapacitation.

He's either a suicidal psychopath, terrorist, or both.
Clearly a demented individual. Pilot must have been having some terrible thoughts in his last moments

Heard on the radio on the way in this morning that the German Police have made a 'significant' discovery on one of his computers that was seized. Won't reveal what it is yet though

Steve was it you??
Seriously though a little bit of me wonders if there is a cover-up going on, there have been a few high-profile Airbus crashes over the last few years and if even a fraction of the Airbus fleet was grounded because of a serious issue with the planes or flight systems the aviation industry would be decimated and it would seriously effect the financial recovery of the EU..

I think this is the sort of job that you should have to give your employer access to medical records and permission to be informed of illness. Then the doctor contacts the employer so you can't ignore it and just say "im ok nothing wrong with me gov"

I was suprised at how quickly they'd implicated him and its now fairly clear that the investigation is as good as done.
Such a despicable act, you've got to be a special type of prick to not only deprive your immediate family of their loved one but to also take 150 other lives.
You can half empathise with the terrorist cause, they at least have something to fight for. This guy shouldn't have shoelaces, never mind be flying a plane.

What would he have done if the pilot hadn't left the cabin. It was only a very short flight, I often don't get up for piss on flights below 4 hours.

Probably done it on the next flight. Might even have been a possibility for a while and its only now come to fruition.
Probably likely he's done that route before so he'll known when was a good time to descend.

German media is now reporting that he sent a message to his ex-girlfriend, saying he would do something that would make the airline industry change their ways and remember his name forever.

Either that or he's sent the message and she's not got it until the plane's hit the mountain. Or a variation of that theme.

At the end of the day it was an easy way out for him and he would die in 0.1 of a second. Clearly, he wasn't acting like a rational individual but with extreme depression sometimes you just don't. I reckon he weighed up ways of killing himself and this was his 'best option' if I can say such a thing. I mean clearly it's a sickening act. I wonder if MH370 contributed to his actions?
Ah, just seen this text message thing... Rather worrying. Sounds like it's been an idea he's had for a while, then.
