They've basically been given much larger areas of freedom with aero, a black box in which they can put pretty much what they want. That's why we're seeing such complex bargeboard and turning vane designs on some cars - because the designers have had some freedom back. The T-Wing fits within one of these 'black box' areas so it's fair play. Whether it works or not, we'll see. I bet the shark fins win out ultimately.

They're not quite to 2008 levels of appendage yet, but some are getting close

The RBR is looking VERY basic, but I'm sure it's just a placeholder car, will be intrigued to see what rolls out on track tomorrow.

Shark fins are susceptible to cross winds, the Merc T bar isn't. ultimately on calm day the shark fin is likely to be the best, but should the conditions be windy over the weekend Merc might have a few options at their disposal. (they still have more engine covers in spain to play with)

Mercedes' double T wing is pretty cool. Amazed at just how much 'stuff' they have at their disposal

2016 all over again by the looks of it but this time Lewis has no internal competition with a clear number 2 driver in VB

Bit early to make those claims,

multiple teams are having issues with there floors. including Merc,

Ferrari's long runs still look strong, I don't think its a done deal for this weekend yet,

Bottas could have been running a different program its early season still teams are likely to still be gathering as much data as they can, running two cars the same wouldnt be that much use.

Good lad Lewis, though considering the gap that Lewis has typically had over Nico at Aus over the last few years - Bottas did well to get so close.

In 2014-2016 that would have still been a Merc front row lockout, so the Ferrari threat is legit and it's about time! Hopefully they can carry it through.

I hope we'll see a bigger split between teammates in general across the grid this year - we saw the cars 2 by 2 fairly often since the hybrids came in - I'm guessing as the teams run similar management profiles during the races with regards to tyres and fuel consumption... but at least one of those factors has been heavily mitigated this year.

The cars do seem to be more knife-edge too on setup, very unusual to see Ricciardo in the wall but not so with Stroll and Palmer... I'm sure the teams will get on top of it, but despite all the aero on these cars - they look a long way short of "easy" to drive.

Satisfied

I was.

Ferrari legit, really is game on

Slightly concerned about the overtaking prospects for the year but it was really nice to have an old school race again. I'd rather fewer overtakes as long as they're significant and there's a chance of a change in lead, even if it's during the pits.

Two great laps from Lewis there, in very different ways!

The first lap was messy for F1 standards, but the flick of oversteer he got half way through the lap was just mental. FOM didn't do it any justice by playing back in slow motion, the realtime footage of it was absolutely insane!

Second lap clean as a whistle, no drama - booya.

Bottas looking a little nervous on the weighscales too, he needs a good start tomorrow and a drama-free race to up front to settle in I think.

Yeah I'm hoping Kimi had issues, that was poor.

Bottas, tutut. That was an error of Jolyon Facepalmer proportions.
