She's 17... She's just got £40,000 and she wants to waste it all?
Talk some sense into the girl, tell her to put £30,000 in a bank and keep it there till she's a bit older and needs it.
Sure spend £10,000 on doing up a car for her.
Then she gets a modded car and has money for later on.
Otherwise could you imagine when she's say 20? she's sold the car for £5,000 and hasn't got much money at all. Wishing she had that £40,000!
If she insists on spending the £40,000 completely then don't get a saxo and mod it up!!!
Get a car thats worth quite a lot already, thus when she goes to sell it she'll get quite a bit of money back.
If you were to buy her a 2nd hand VTR for £5000 and then blow £35,000 on mods then ok she'd have a trick car for a year or two, but when she goes to sell it it'll only be worth 5-7k still!
thus losing £35,000!
If you buy her a car worth £30,000 now - get some alloys, a bodykit? etc...
then she can sell the car in a year or two and get a lot of her money back.
Still think its pretty stupid considering as you said 'this girl has no idea about cars' - why waste money on something you don't really care about!?

Im with paul j on this one. i really dont think she should spend 40k on a car. Spend a bit then use the rest for later. 30k in the bank is a pretty good thing.
Feel sorry for the girl too, i couldn't even imagine what she has and is going through.
Dont take the piss, talk to her about it properly, get a nice little car, do a few things to it if she wants. Then leave the rest in a higher interest bank. That way when shes 21 she can maybe move out etc.....
Also tell her she can have mine for £9500

I'd get something like a TVR, Evo 5/6/7, Scooby, maybe even a Merc or a BMW.
