because air is getting pushed in rahter than sucked. makes for better combustion. also means you can have a smaller displacement too. look at mine 130hp from a 1.4L. you'd need at least 2.0L for that

more air is forced into the engine, hence there is less unburnt fuel, this is why you hardly see N/A diesels being produced anymore, even if its not for power the turbo is to reduce emissions. also meens you need to pump in less fuel to get the same performance as less is wasted as black smoke hence more mpg.
