I cant see us spending that amount on him tbh.
I know we are still owed approx £7m from them for Crouch but even so I cant see us being willing to spend more than £12m and even then that would be a stupid amount imo.

17million is a silly amount for a right-back, even if he looked good the other day and this season
Don't liverpool only have a 20million budget anyway, and have to sell to get more money
Anyway, no doubt rafa will come out and say he cost 7million and is being paid 20k a week

Nah, we have money available, Rafa just isnt stupid and coming out saying it so every club adds £5m to the pricetag (although Pompey seemingly have!!).
If the deal does happen I doubt it'll be for £17m. Pompey are in too much money trouble and owe us plenty of money to demand a stupid price like that.

2 factors, he's english, and they are possibly being taken over by someone who is certainly not in financial trouble, plus city over-bidding for everyone on the planet is driving prices up

They havent been taken over yet thats fosho - so removing a £7m debt (plus bringing some money in to the club) wouldnt be such a bad thing for them at this moment.
Will have to see what happens, but I seriously hope its not for that amount.

There is more chance of a takeover happening if any debts are removed in the first instance.

We are owed 7 million from Crouch so in reality we will be forking out 10 million which for a young english international right back is about the going rate.
If he comes I can see Arbeloa going definately as Johnson offers more going forward.

It doesnt really mean we are paying only £10m, as we would of ended up getting that £7m, so it would still be a final figure of £17m.
If we get the reported £8m for Arbeloa then that'll be much better, but is Johnson worth £9m more than Arbeloa?!

Yeah but you could look at it this way...we have swapped a proportion of crouch for a proportion of johnson. The money is all on paper really and wont change hands so we wont be losing any of the 7 million. Anyway its not like we can call the 7 million in and spend it elsewhere is it.

Or you could look at it this way:
£24m for two average players

Im not sure what the payment terms were on the Crouch deal, but Id imagine a large proportion of that £7m must be due sooner rather than later.
I know what you are saying though, but at the end of the day it still ends up meaning we have spent £17m (if that is the figure) on Johnson.

I would sooner us spend that on a left back - get rid of Dossena.
Or more importantly add to it and get a striker in.

Do what Torres said and get Villa. Burst the bank if you have to. Him and Torres up front would be ridiculous.

I think LB is sorted with Insua and Aurelio, wouldnt waste the money bringing anyone else in. I expect Dossena will end up going back to Italy, his stock is still high there so we'll get what we paid for him back.
The good thing is Rafa is in full control of the transfers now and not Parry, so you should be able to read in to the Johnson deal that if we've enough to spend that on a RB then we'll have enough for a few more top quality signings.

We've no chance of getting him with the teams chasing him, the price would just be wayyyy out of our league.
