There's a bit more to a gaming rig than 3 things

That one in your room which didn't run GTA? Or you bought a new one,
If you build one up yourself you can build a better spec than a ready made one for the same price.
I was looking into it last year just didnt have the cash

And if he wants it to be a good PC, he would need like 4GB RAM (or more), a quad core or a dual core
A gamers mouse (optional but good).
Monitor (TFT preferrable, but LCD will be fine). These will be about £100 (+).
CD Drive, you'd think he'd want a good one for when the disc is being read and copied to the HDD.
A big HDD would be required for the games
Enjoy making a good one for £500 Luke

Well it didn't say gaming PC when I bought it. But the RAM and processor say otherwise
and no I didn't.

Duel cores are cheap as is RAM, I have 4 GB ram and an AMD athlon x2 overclocked to 3.2ghz and it runs everything perfect, wasnt expensive either.
Mine is about 2 years old now so I could do with buying some new parts.

You get what you pay for mate, for that cash though it's a decent PC but wouldn't run high end games very well.
