What a bugger mate. Hope you sort it. These things happen with engines so at least you'll know the bottom end is fine after!

16/5

so today i set myself the challenge of getting the piston rings done and all back up and running for PVS (just over 3 weeks)

Had 3 quotes for the rings:
motor factors: £156
vauxhall £327
autovaux £24 per piston = £96

i cant see how the prices can be so different? Autovaux said they are genuine Vauxhall parts and i've triple checked with them its all included.
vauxhall worked out at round 72 odd a piston and autovaux are saying £24 per piston?
doesnt sound right, but ive been assured it is....

started getting the car ready today:

the water in the pistons has come from where the system wasn't fully drained. the water is slowly passing through the piston so i assume this proves the rings are damaged?

27/5

so after a busy car show weekend (crystal palace speed trials on Saturday and classic ford show today) got speaking to a few people about my blue smoke problem. a lot of people have doubted the piston rings as i have good compression on all cylinders. one engine builder i spoke to today did that if the bores could be glazed. had a look tonight and they do look kinda glazed so would this cause the blue smoke?

got the parts for the rebuild on friday from Autovaux:

if this doesnt fix it i'll be annoyed but at least i'll know the bottom is good.

now to the other problem of over fueling / poor idling and occasional hesitation/ kangerooing in low revs. been doing a little research and everything points to a faulty EGR valve.

the engine management light came on once while it was kangerooing , did the paper clip test and it came up with the EGR valve aswell.
however, since fitting the powerbox, i've removed the EGR valve and blacked it off. i assume this is normal practice when fitting a powerbox? is this missing EGR valve likely to be causing my problems?

got myself a small plate at classic ford today too

You'll need the egr plugged in still or your engine management light will come on

2/6

spent the day with my dad putting the engine back together.

firstly honed the bores ready for the new rings:

new conrod bearings:

put the pistons in using the compressor and tightened them all up onto the crank. tested to see if they all move freely, which they did.

pistons back in:

new headgasket:

got the head and pulleys on and tightened the head down.

Belts back on

then packed up for the day as we were a bit knackered. should get it finished tomorrow; sump, both manifolds, rocker cover and wiring.
Hopefully it runs ok!
