Going to go for a roof rack for my E46

BMW bars for £30 on eBay then a Thule holder for £50 and I'm sorted

But BUGGER pay £159 for it. It used to be £120, and discounted to £89.99 when there was a sale on. It was originally branded as a Halfords rack then Exodus, which I believe is an in house brand name. But it is actually manufactured by Mont Blanc.

Although it looks unsightly, this actually works really well.

I borrowed one off a mate when I had my Punto. It cleared the tailgate spoiler, so decent for anyone with one of them. When it was mounted with all 6 straps (works without the 2 side ones) I could rock the car side to side with the rack it was that tight. And the Punto had shockingly hard suspension.

Cheers Deano. What are your thoughts towards the Thule 9103 or the Saris Bone?

New world record to work this morning of 7 miles in 24 mins 53 seconds. Quickest mile in 2 mins 48 seconds. Well happy with that as I was feeling like a sack of shit after going running last night. Mental. Only down side is I was 25 mins early for work.

tbh, I don't have a great deal of experience with bike racks. I generally go biking with dad in the Transit so never needed one. When he had one on his 520i it slipped and dented the back, nothing major.

The majority of issues with bike racks is because they have been poorly fitted. I had a friend drive from Biggleswade to Afan in South Wales with 3 bikes on the back of his Corsa using that Pendle rack. Lowered 1.4 SXi Corsa D, he said he sat at a steady 80mph all the way and had no issues.

I would always champion the racks with solid straps (e.g. the Halfords/Exodus Advanced High or the Thule 9103) purely because it makes more sense - fabric straps can come loose.

The Saris Bones always get good reviews but I only ever see them on traditional saloons or large hatches, like a Vectra.

tbh, the best solution in my eyes is a towbar mounted, but if you have the towbar fitted with by a mobile fitter, plus rack and numberplates, you're looking at circa-£500.

Roof ones are fine unless you forget they're on there! And it depends on the mounting points. For Thule my Fiesta would have horrible clamps that go around the door frame and near the rear windows, but the actual Ford ones replace the rubber seals on the roof with 3 bits to reveal some mounting points. Genuine bars from Ford, plus Thule racks I was look at £250.

I'd rather put the seats down thanks and chuck it in the boot. Until it rains

Here's the same rack they sell in Halfords for £159 from the manufacturer.

http://www.montblancgroup.com/en/bike-carriers/rear-hanging-three-bike-bike-carrier-easy-go-11

You can get it at Machine Mart of all places, super cheap - just need to make sure it includes the right fitting kit. The ones from Halfords are included.

Can't ride until the weekend now - away on business until Friday. Will be doing some local cycle routes on Saturday, will be up for Cannock at some point but I don't know how I can get myself and the bike there with such an impractical car

You're in the same boat as me

Luckily my partner has a Ford Focus so we can get a bike rack for that.

Can probably arrange to give you a lift up for the CS Cannock Bike Ride (tm)
