excellent work here guys, massive credit to lee for the fabrication and work goe into this genuinly impressed... so now we ave to have a shooutout 1.8 turbo vs. 1.8 charged
thanks, been a really good fun project! i think turbo will win currently, unless the astra gets some mods to use more boost, but thats never been the focus of this project, just wanted a decent amount more go to compliment the handling, which is already wicked, really looking forward to seeing how it goes round the ‘ring
true, and i would hope the corsa does as its got a fair bit more poke... but this is a track weapon, and you know out on track it all comes down to driver skill...
i'll be on track at trax anyway

so, time for the strip down of the astra, but first, a nice thing, debugged grille, looks wicked, really suits the new bumper
but thats not what we're here to see, so firstly drain the oil, that appears to have turned into black treacle…
not a good sign, sump next, then a bearing cap, no.3 bearings looked like this…
fucked basically, can see where the white metal has been worn away and also the bearing had spun not he crank, scoring it nicely in the process, and that was a good one! no.1 bearing had welded itself into one piece and remained on the crank, you can juuuust make out what used o be the join between the two bearings…
then checked the cam bearings, which are also scored to buggery
so, new one please…

looks like the oil pump failed, the oil has actually broken down into its constituent parts then congealed so must have not been moving much..i expect to find it in a few bits when i rip it out on saturday, got something for you btw warren...

right, well the new engine for the astra turned up today...
so stripped it to bits, like you do...
loks mint, seems it really is a genuine low miler, bores only have a very light thrust wear pattern and no lip at all and all the bearings look great(crap photo)
so, this weekend will turn two engines into one, as the original head has survived thankfully, fingers crossed at least this will make TVL

righty, so made a decent start on the astra today
first job was to fit some ARP rod bolts to the new lump, an upgrade no less as the last one didn't have any!
chamfered the caps first
also fitted new big end bearings, always a good plan when fitting new bolts
lots of assembly lube even though it wont sit for ages this time
that done it was sump, flywheel, clutch, all that shit, didn't take too many photos though, then it was ready for the head
then fitted the cams, back plate, cam belt, and removed the filter canister and modded the block accordingly, then the oil cooler take off and spin on filter, and then it was a complete engine ready to go in
bit of craning later and its in
fitted a few more bits but not much, will finish it off monday then have a quick test drive
and no, no BGW yet...

Sorry if I missed it, but have you worked out what made the engine go bang? Worn engine been put under much more load/stress with the charger?

nah i dont think so, it maybe well be a contributing factor, but it looks likely it was oil pump failure, possibly caused by a slightly low oil level and some decent cornering forces, leading to fucked bearings leading to even less oil pressure leading to jelly not oil is most likely, and while that could be put down to the age of the engine i doubt it, just one of them things....

righty, its back together and running now! went up today and finished all the other bits i had left, as well as a little bit of tarting up
this is now a lie!
, but then i burnt my fingers quite badly trying to bleed the coolant system, deep joy, so left it at that, will have a drive of it tomorrow evening before will comes to collect

havent driven it yet, had the ump with a flat battery and burnt fingers, so left the battery charging and came home instead to source a spare juust in case it doesn’t take a charge, had it running very easily with a jumper battery though(thanks brians manta) and yes, does look a lot neater, whihc is surprising as literally all i have done is paint the rocker cover
