There's two ways to look at it though. Rooney cost about that at a similar age, but being a striker he got more fame with goals. If Shaw continues to progress like this it'll be a shrewd signing. But also a huge gamble.

Gill wouldnt have paid more than £29m for AH, he'd have been straight back on the plane if they did that across him

Shaw fee is stupid but having watched him a few times he looks a quality player with enormous potential - add to the fact he's 18 and English and that's the price you pay.

Could look silly or could look like a masterstroke when he's one of the best full backs in the World in a few years.

Lovren is a fantastic CB, and young too! But Southampton are making a hell of a profit
I highly doubt Shaw will sit on the bench for long. He'll have Ever mentoring him and if he progresses at the same rate, he'll be first choice before long.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he's a converted left winger within a year.
