Made the 180 mile round trip on 43.5 mpg. Had a van flashing me in the Dartford Tunnel after a quick blast of the exhaust and a big bang

TBH most of the journey was spent @ 50 mph on cruise control due to average speed cameras and me coasting down hills in neutral. Just picked little hints up off the drivers at my work

Which means you need fuel to maintain idle. If you left it in gear the car would turn the engine and use less fuel, if any.
You'll see 999 instant if it's forward momentum is being maintained by the hill. Clutch in and although you'll still be in the hundreds because you're doing 800rpm at 60mph, it's not as frugal as maintaining drive.

My previous best was something like 48.1 mpg just sticking on the cruise control. This time cruise control was used on the flats and hills and coasting down the big enough hills returned the figure of 52.3.
I just thought i'd try what the drivers are asked to do to boost their mpg in the works lorries

think ive heard you can get better with the cruise control off. Remember it from that top gear where he drove the A8 from london to scotland and back on one tank.

They also say putting the car into 2nd and rolling upto traffic lights uses less petrol than coasting upto them.
I'm not really fussed as works way seemed effective for me, I just wanted to break 50mpg

you use more petrol in neutral then you do in gear and not using throttle
edit - Ian
I broke 50mpg yesterday, 49.9 bad times

Your's a petrol right?
That sounds pretty good going, I can't get over 30mpg in my car however I drive it.
