Bit of all 3. Not necessarily a softer saddle, just a better saddle!

Maybe I'll go for padded shorts to start with. I used to have an SDG Bel Air saddle which didn't seem to cause me problems, but I've just seen how much they cost these days!

I started off with Endura gear. I ended up buying some Gore and a couple of pair of Castelli padded shorts in a sale and could instantly see why they cost more to start with.

BTW Im not slating Endura, I couldnt really fault them on shorter rides, longer rides would get a bit uncomfortable.

There's a cheaper Shimano one out there somewhere too; it's what you originally described - an SPD on one side and a cage style flat on the other.

Will try some padded shorts out first of all and maybe a new saddle at a later date

I'd have suggested something like that too. The DX's are good but because the SPD bit sticks out both sides, it is a pain in the arse riding in flat shoes unless it is to the pub!

I was going to say the same, I had some DX pedals on mine when I got it, no good really for any proper riding using flats. They came off straight away

The padded shorts helped, but I think I need to man the fuck up a bit too. Think it's like getting used to ski boots. Made some impressive speed on the way home from work too:
