i thought you knew about football and can see this is wise
on the matter of birmingham, the team that is currently doing so well was the team and the manager g&s financed, so they must have done something right
Its nothing to do with the amount (i.e. it being £50m or £100m) - its to do with paying over the odds (in wages) for a player who just isnt worth it. That is exactly how you have got in to this mess (and thats from the mouth of one of your new owners).
Now you've set an example of paying him a silly price what do you think is going to happen is the summer when you negotiate? Or when you try to get your current players negotiating for new contracts?
And again, I havent said him as a player isnt a bad option, he is better than you've got and thats fine. My problem is your new owners coming out when they bought the club and saying this culture of paying over the odds in wages is what has crippled you - then go and do the EXACT same thing.
And you cant use league position as evidence of owners doing well - otherwise you'd say United and Liverpool have good owners - but neither do. Christ you could say Chelsea and City have good owners, but in reality all they have is a sugar daddy.

Well he is another example of paying over the odds, they have just gone and done the exact same thing.

Would you complain about Liverpool bringing in a player for the same amounts as Benni McCarthy if it got you Champions League football?
It's the same thing, If Liverpool don't make CL they lose out on a possible £40mill (?)
If West Ham get relegated, which was looking a possibility earlier in the season, due to usual injury list they seem to have, then they'd lose out on £40mill-odd as well.
Paying £2m + 50k a week to make yourself £40mill isn't really that bad.
As said he's a player who's been around the premiership for a few years, knows what's expected of him.
I don't think it's being argued that it is too much for him, Ben agreed to that, and I think Jr did, but clubs always get shafted in Jan, and West Ham desperately needed to bring in strikers.

Id totally agree with you if I thought he'd score a bucket full of goals to keep you up - but fact is this is his 4th season of scoring very few goals (and thats including 2 seasons under Hughes at Blackburn) - so all evidence is that he wont be scoring all that many for you.

He might not, but it's better having him up there than Nouble at the moment, completely unproven kid who will need time to get settled into the team.
Fair enough he might not be a proven scorer, but he knows the premiership, and a bit of experience is what we need at the moment.
No doubt he'll be injured by next week and sit at home counting his money for the next 2 years anyway.

Yes, but just read your post above (forget who you were writing about).
Does PL experience but not a proven goal scorer in last 4 seasons = £50k a week?

If him being in the team, whether he's hassling defenders, setting up goals, or if he hits some form and scores some, (1 goal will be more than most of the strikers there previously)... If that helps keep West Ham up, then he's worth buying.
I agree £50k a week is too much (said that in the first post), but they obviously think he's worth a punt.

hes scored goals in the prem
cant think of anybody else we could have got who would have, still think he's score more with us than he did at blackburn, as we play better football 90% of the time, and possibly more suited to his style of play

As I pointed out last night though, Hughes last two seasons saw him score hardly any goals.
I hope he does do it for you, as I do like WHU, and can think of a lot more teams Id rather see go down - I just find it ironic he is on £50k a week after what your new owners said.

Seven Stars 056 (42)
Ajax 035 (20)
Celta Vigo 066 (10)
¡ú Porto (loan) 011 (12)
Porto 075 (34)
Blackburn Rovers 109 (37)
West Ham United
National team
1997¨C South Africa 077 (32)
So a goal every 2.8 Games, 15 games left in the leage makes me think he will score 5.35 goals, if that keeps us up and a few assists, good deal

11 goals in 42 games, 4 of those goals were pens.
Now with the pens thats nearly 1 in 4.
Without the pens (assuming you're scoring pens at the moment?) its 1 in 6.

Even including the year before its...
19 in 73 games, which is again nearly 1 in 4.
Without the 9 pens included in those 19 goals it is over 1 in 8.

6 in 18 this season
10 in 29 last season
7 in 33 year before
23 in 80 in total, so just under 1 in 4. 1 pen in all of those goals. 17 assists too.
Not amazing, but was never going to be as he really shouldnt be the main striker at any club.
Personally, I like the thought of Torres being partnered up front with someone who is a real handful and the defenders have to concentrate on. At the moment they basically have just him to mark, so will be interesting to see what he'd be like with a lot more space.
He also wouldnt be on £50k a week playing for us!

It would be, we dont really have all that many on more than £50k tbf - I know a few of those who signed new contracts last year were on less and have just gone to slightly more.
