yes, filter was matured, cherry barbs can be used for cycling and silver tip tetras are quite hardy, the neons were 4 for £2, they'll only be eaten by a snail anyway.

ah thats cool, didnt want all those fish ending up dead if it wasnt! Just watch your ammonia level for the next 2 weeks or so, as you'll probably still go through a mini-cycle seems the bacteria in the filter hasnt had any ammonia to feed off.

I've had food and plants in there. Thats what the book I have said to put in there to get it started and ammonia levels are reading 0. I am a bit worried that it could be reading 0 incase that means that the cycle hasn't even started yet

plants wont do anything to get it started as they dont produce ammonia. What food have you had in there?

What are your nitrates and nitrites readings? These will both be fairly high if your cycle is done and your ammonia is at zero.

this may be a silly question, but is it possible to keep a fish tank outside? Sheltered of course. Any issues with temperature?

I don't have the space do put one where I would like (front room).

depends what fish you want to keep! Extra heaters will be needed if tropical as tank will cool more (especially during winter) but it can be done.

I always start mine by putting some prawns in some tights (or a tub with holes in) and leaving in the tank. These will give off ammonia and start the cycle.

Can also buy cheap fish (goldfish or something like that) which will shite and give off ammonia aswell.

yeah, just grab a pack of frozen ones. After a few days you'll have a huge ammonia spike, take them out and wait for the cycle to finish (sero ammonia, low nitrates and high nitrites...think thats the right way round!). Do a water change then your ready for fish.
