So could the MAP sensor issue be related?

Just had the dizzy cap off, when you turn the key to II, you get a big spark across the dizzy to HT 1.
I'm really puzzled.

Thats the exact problem i had, you'd get a weak single with ignition, but no spark when cranking.
Changed the dizzy and it sorted it.
Hm, but if you know your dizzy is working, not sure what else it could be.
I was going to suggest the drive lug had broke off the dizzy it wasn't rotating, but you've already checked that too, lol.

We had this problem and the problem turned out to be with the ignition barrel.
What your describing is a common problem where the ignition barrel is not providing +12v to the ECU or coil while cranking. The contacts in the barrel easy get fudged.
When you turn the barrel to II, the +12v goes to the ECU and the coil hence why you get your little spark. When you turn it to III, the starter motor turns but if it is fucked you will lose +12v to the ECU or coil.
Test it if you can

Think what I need is someone round here with a working dizzy 8v to give theirs a try on mine.
Will have a look in the ignition for any loose wires etc, couldnt see any today though.

Its not usually a loose wire, inside the barrel itself are small gold contacts.

Which is what im saying
You have two types of ignition live. One will stay live while the engine is cranking and the other will shut off while the engine is cranking (the blowers ect turn off while cranking if you notice).
Does the diagnostic light go out while ur cranking because it should stay on......

Stays on, but blinks momentarily.
I has an aftermarket immobiliser, on the car when I got it - asked an expert and he said that shouldn't be affecting it.

Right, so you have had the battery off the car? Maybe the immobilisers back up battery has gone flat and it isn't a happy chappy?

What type of immobiliser is it?
Could be an immobiliser problem, if the coil circuit is immobilised...

It's a Foxguard immobiliser. If you dont deactivate it, it prevents the engine turning over at all, like it did before I rebuilt the engine.
When I asked a specialist, he said there was no reset procedure required for it, should just work as normal...

put it all back together and see if it will go with a push that will proove / disproove Richie's theory as he sounds like he is onto something just not sure how this could have happened
All sounds a bit random and frustrating to me.

Could it just be that the engine has expired? seeing as you've tried everything else, I can't come to any other conclusion

Maybe some Portuguese people nicked it.
I asked the insurance about an engine conversion yesterday, and they won't insure me on anything but a like for like replacement. Cunts.

I'd try another dizzy, long shot, but perhaps the one you fitted went faulty...

Try running it on diesel. You don't need a spark for that.
