Fair point, but the 9k honda engine makes about the same torque a standard 105bhp vauxhall engine makes at 6k revs.....

What has that got to do with the ECOTEC engines in all fairness?

I have no problem with the topic, its the fact that we were talking about a VAUXHALL engine and somehow we managed to get to talking about french hatches.

its a standard small block engine. not exactly exciting or the most reliable. it does the job and can be made a bit more pokey.

I have an 1.6 16v ecotech engine in the astra - no complaints from me, espically compared to my old 1.2 corsa - but if it is as bad as people say thankgod I have a 3 year warranty

loved me X14XE, had it for nearly 2 years, when i first got it, was always checking water and oil every 2 weeks for the first 6 months then gave up as it was always at the same level, never broke down once.
on me second and thats a C16XE at 120,000 miles, never broken down, uses a bit of oil and water but not too much.
over all i have not bad word about them

fantastic engines when you compare with other manufacturers attempts.
designed by Lotus and used massively in motorsport, huge success in rallying and very very strong from standard. Mine has been revving to over 8000 rpm for 12k miles pushing over 170 bhp and hasnt missed a beat. Im currently building one that will see 200bhp and im confident it will be just as reliable as before.
The problem lies not with the engine itself but the inlet design fitted by vauxhall. without that it would have been the best 1.6 built in the last 2o years. the experts at Track and race car magazine agree.

without the restrictive inlet how would it be better than say the VTS saxo engine 1.6 16v engine?

stronger and more reliable, cheaper to get big power, better head design.....

Because it would make 150bhp, as Lotus found when they were developing it, the cams and inlet fitted were there to choke the engine, same as Cosworth had to do with the Sierra engine, that made 300bhp when they bolted it together and they had to work to lower the output.

i dont agree with that.. your engine dave waas eating loads of oil was it not after a rebuild ? and 1.6 16v TU lumps are far more stronger

but cams, inlet and remap wont see 150bhp. i had them plus exhaust, decat, manifold and made under 140bhp.
VTS engine makes that with exhaust, decat, manifold, ind kit

erm, yes it will I have dne it myself. A mate of mine has a nova with a x16xe on a mantzel with cams and management and it makes 160+ bhp. it all depends who builds it and maps it.

Mine would have made 150 with cams and another remap, so would broster's, and we had the 8 foot black plastic inlet
