only other option you have would be to get a private plate, for example ant 01 and then make the recess smaller ? a few inches either side ?
or keep the plate on the front, take it off for shows etc

I know it's different, but bikes don't have front number plates so why should cars have to?

there wont be anywhere that specifically mentions the front wndow, but then they arent going to create a new rule for every part of the vehicle, otherwise it would get stupid,
its not allowed because the window is an obstruction, and the rules are the plate must be free from obstruction

I have to agree with steve (who would have thought ) About his views on the plate being in the window. Its hard enough during the day to look at a plate through a windscreen and see it clearly due to reflections on the glass. Would be near impossible to see it at night, and if the law states it needs to be clearly visible to legal than it must be illegal.

how a bout, phone the DVLA or go to an MOT place and ask them? they are the ones setting the law. and if the dvla say its ok then get them to put it in writing! then keep it in your car for if you get pulled.
I have a cut down number plate on the front of my car and have in writing from the dvla saying that it is not illigal. And the police round here take that so all is good
